Where to eat Italian in the Financial District
Every good Italian place we send guests to sits within a 10-minute walk of our front door at 17 John Street. That's the useful thing about eating down here: the neighborhood is small, so you're never picking a restaurant based on how far you have to travel. You're picking it based on what kind of night you want.
A quick lay of the land. Ann Street and John Street have the small neighborhood rooms, the kind where the pasta is made in house and the tables are close together. Stone Street, two blocks south of Wall Street, is the cobblestone block where the tables spill outside and it gets loud in a good way. Front Street and the Seaport are where you go when you want to walk off dinner along the water afterward. And 4 World Trade Center has Eataly, which is really a market with restaurants inside it.
One thing worth knowing before you book: the Financial District empties out on weekends. Some kitchens cut their Sunday hours or close entirely, especially the lunch-driven spots near Wall Street. If you're eating on a Sunday, call first. On weeknights it's the opposite problem, since the after-work crowd hits between 6 and 8, so either go early or book ahead.
