Where to Eat Near 17 John Street: The Financial District's Dining Streets

Start with Stone Street

Stone Street is the first place we point guests toward, and it's about a two-block walk south from our door. It's one of the oldest streets in the city, now closed to cars, paved in cobblestones, and lined end to end with restaurants and bars. In warm months the whole lane fills with outdoor tables, so it's an easy call when you want dinner without planning much. It runs busy on weekday evenings when the offices let out and stays lively into the night.

The rest of the Financial District

Beyond Stone Street, food is spread out rather than clustered, and most of it is a 5-to-10-minute walk from us. Head toward the water and you'll pass everything from quick lunch counters to sit-down spots as you get closer to the waterfront. The area around the South Street Seaport, about a 10-minute walk east, has more restaurants with river views, and it's a nice direction to wander on a warm evening.

One thing worth knowing: the Financial District is quieter on weekends than midweek. Plenty of places stay open, but a few of the office-lunch spots keep shorter Saturday and Sunday hours, so it's worth a quick check before you head out.

Or cook in your suite

If you'd rather not go out, every suite at 17 John has a full kitchen. Guests staying a few nights or longer tend to cook at least once, and there are grocery options within a short walk for stocking up. It's part of the point of staying somewhere with room to live rather than just a room.

Getting a little farther afield

Tribeca, just north of us, has a heavier concentration of well-known restaurants and is a short walk or one subway stop away. If you're up for a short trip, it's the direction to go for a bigger night out.
