Most people come down here for one thing, see it in twenty minutes, and leave without realising the rest of the campus is right there. The World Trade Center complex covers 16 acres and the 9/11 Memorial takes up eight of them, so there's a whole second half of the site that never makes it onto anyone's list.
We're on John Street, a short walk east of the campus, and this is the walk we describe to guests at the desk. It's laid out in the order that works on foot: pools first, then the plaza, then the edges, then whatever you want to go inside. The plaza is open air and free to walk through, so you can do the outdoor half of this on a first morning without booking anything.
One thing worth saying before you go. The memorial is a burial place for a lot of families, and it reads that way when you're standing in it. People do talk quietly there, and we'd tell you the same thing we'd tell a friend: leave the phone in your pocket at the pools, at least for the first few minutes.
Give it two hours, or half a day
Two hours covers everything outdoors at an unhurried pace. Add ninety minutes for the museum and about an hour for One World Observatory, and you've filled a day. If you only have a morning, do the pools, the Survivor Tree and the Oculus, and come back another time for the rest.
