Stay east of the site, not on top of it
The best place to stay for a visit to One World Trade Center is a few blocks east, in the Financial District proper. We're at 17 John Street, and the memorial plaza is a walk of under ten minutes west along Fulton Street. That's close enough to go twice if you want to, and far enough that you're sleeping on a quiet street instead of next to a construction-and-tourist corridor.
It also means the rest of downtown is right there. Wall Street is two blocks from our door in the other direction. Stone Street, the cobblestone block where most of the good downtown restaurants are, is a short walk south. The ferry terminal is about five minutes on foot, so a harbor trip is a morning, not an expedition.
Why families end up downtown for this trip
Because the memorial is a heavy few hours and you'll want somewhere to go afterward. Visiting with kids usually means an early start, a long stretch on your feet, and then a hard stop. Being ten minutes away changes how the day works: you walk back, everyone sits down, the little one naps, and you go out again at five instead of writing off the afternoon.
Our suites are apartment-style, which is the other half of it. You get a living room with a couch, a kitchen with kitchenware and a coffee maker, towels, linens and toiletries, and enough floor space that nobody's climbing over a suitcase. The larger layouts include a Signature 3-Bedroom with a private terrace and a Deluxe 2-Bedroom with a private terrace, both on the third floor right next to each other, which is the setup families and two-couple trips tend to ask for. We keep pack n plays on hand free of charge; just tell us ahead and we'll have one set up before you arrive.
There's a fitness center, a guest lounge, a laundry room and a conference room in the building. Wi-Fi is included throughout. Daily housekeeping isn't part of the rate, but we can arrange it for a fee if you'd like it, so let us know in advance.
What's walkable from here
Most of Lower Manhattan, honestly. This is the part of the city that rewards not having a plan.
- The 9/11 Memorial and One World Trade Center, west along Fulton. We wrote a separate guide on visiting, including how to think about the museum and the observatory, and it's linked below.
- Wall Street and the old financial blocks, two blocks south. Best in the early morning when the streets are empty and the buildings look like the photographs.
- South Street Seaport, east toward the river, for the waterfront, the piers and views back at the Brooklyn Bridge.
- Stone Street, for dinner. Cobblestones, low buildings, tables outside in warm weather.
- The ferry terminal, about five minutes away, for the harbor and the Statue of Liberty run.
- The Brooklyn Bridge walkway, close enough to walk onto and cross into Brooklyn without a train.
The neighborhood is quiet on weekends. If your visit lands on a Saturday or Sunday, expect wide empty sidewalks around the office blocks and most of the activity concentrated near the memorial, the Seaport and the water.
Getting here and getting around
Subway lines converge a few blocks from the building, and the ferry terminal is about a five-minute walk, which covers most of what you'll want to do downtown. We don't have parking on site. The nearest garage is iPark at 29 Platt Street, about three minutes away on foot, and guests usually check rates on SpotHero before they drive in. The practical stuff, up front
Check-in is after 4:00 PM and check-out is by 11:00 AM. Check-in is self-service through a smart lock and keypad, and we send the instructions the day before you arrive, so you don't need to time your flight around a desk. The front desk is staffed 24/7 if you need something. Luggage storage in the lobby is free on both your arrival and departure days, which is worth knowing if you land in the morning or fly out at night and want one more walk to the water before you go.
A couple of things we can't do: pets aren't allowed, and the building is entirely non-smoking. Late check-out until 1:00 PM is $100 when it's available.
