Quick answer
You can see most of the Financial District on foot in a single day from 17 John Street. Start with the 9/11 Memorial and One World Trade about 10 minutes west, loop down to Battery Park and the free Staten Island Ferry, walk back up through the South Street Seaport, and finish with dinner on Stone Street. Almost everything here sits within a 15-minute walk of John Street, so you won't need the subway once.
The Financial District is small and dense, which makes it one of the easier parts of Manhattan to see on foot. From 17 John Street you're within a 15-minute walk of most of it, so you can leave the subway alone and just wander. Here's how we'd spend a full day, roughly west to south and back up. Wear comfortable shoes and go clockwise so you end near Stone Street for dinner.
A note on timing: the morning sights (the memorial, the observatory) open earlier and get busier as the day goes on, so we've front-loaded them. The waterfront and the Seaport are better in the late afternoon light.
