How to Walk to the Brooklyn Bridge From the Financial District

The Manhattan-side pedestrian entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge is about a 12-minute walk from 17 John Street, and the full crossing takes roughly 25 to 40 minutes on foot.

The short answer

From our door at 17 John Street, you're about a 12-minute walk from where you can actually get onto the Brooklyn Bridge on foot. The pedestrian walkway starts on the Manhattan side near City Hall Park, on the east side of Centre Street. Once you're on it, plan on 25 to 40 minutes to reach the Brooklyn end, depending on how packed the walkway is.

The walk to the entrance

Head north and a little east from John Street. The simplest route is up toward Frankfort Street and City Hall Park, then to the ramp that carries walkers up onto the bridge deck. It's flat, well-signed, and easy to do with a coffee in hand. If you'd rather ride, the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall stop (4/5/6) drops you right by the entrance.

One thing worth knowing: the bridge has a dedicated pedestrian path and a separated bike lane now, so you're not dodging cyclists the way you used to. Stay on the walking side and you'll be fine.

When to go

Early morning is the move. Before about 9am the walkway is quiet, the light is good on the skyline behind you, and you can actually stop for photos without holding anyone up. Sunset is the other sweet spot, though you'll share it with more people. Midday in summer is the crowd peak, so skip that if you can.

It's an easy round trip from the hotel. Walk over to the Brooklyn side, poke around DUMBO or Brooklyn Bridge Park for an hour, then walk back or grab the subway home. The whole loop fits in a morning.

What to bring

Not much. Comfortable shoes, water in summer, and a layer if it's breezy, since it's always windier up on the deck than at street level. There's no shade on the bridge, so a hat helps on a hot, clear day.
