Where to Buy Groceries in the Financial District

Quick answer

The closest full supermarkets to the Financial District's core are Jubilee Marketplace at 99 John Street and 55 Fulton Market at 55 Fulton Street, both a short walk from us on John Street. For a bigger shop, Whole Foods Market at One Wall Street (the entrance is 66 Broadway) has the widest selection downtown, and City Acres Market at 70 Pine Street runs 7am to midnight every day when you need something late. Do the big shop first, then top up on the way home.

The first errand of a long stay is almost always groceries. Our suites have kitchens, so most people walk out on day one looking for coffee, milk, fruit, something for dinner, and they'd rather not carry it far.

Good news: you don't have to. We're at 17 John Street, three minutes on foot from the Fulton Street subway station, and there are four proper food shops inside a ten-minute walk. They are not interchangeable. One is a full-size supermarket with a produce department worth the extra blocks, two are neighborhood markets you can nip into in slippers, and one stays open until midnight. Here's how we'd use them.

One thing to know about this neighborhood before you plan the week: the Financial District empties out on weekends. That's quieter streets and shorter checkout lines on a Saturday morning, which is the opposite of most of Manhattan. If you're cooking for a group, shop Saturday, not Friday at six.
