The Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting 2026: Doing It From Downtown, and Where to Stay

Quick answer

The 2026 Rockefeller Center tree lighting date hadn't been confirmed by Rockefeller Center as of late August 2026, but the ceremony has long fallen on the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving, which points to Wednesday, December 2, 2026. Rockefeller Center's own directions are the B, D, F or M to 47-50 Sts Rockefeller Center, or the 6 to 51 St. From us on John Street the simplest single ride is the E from World Trade Center to 5 Av/53 St, about 19 minutes, then a short walk west. Our advice: skip the ceremony night crowds and see the tree on a weekday morning instead, then come back downtown to sleep somewhere quiet.

The date isn't official yet. Rockefeller Center's holiday page still says to check back for 2026 details, and the ceremony has traditionally landed on the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving, which would make it Wednesday, December 2, 2026. One holiday guide is already listing that date. Treat it as likely, not confirmed, and check rockefellercenter.com before you plan an evening around it.

Here's the part nobody tells you: the ceremony is the worst night of the season to actually see the tree. Streets around the plaza close, the crowd builds through the afternoon, and most people watching end up looking at a screen or the back of someone's coat. The tree is lit every night for weeks afterward and comes down in January. If you're in town for the season rather than for the ceremony itself, go on a weekday morning and you'll get the plaza almost to yourself.

We're downtown on John Street, which is a deliberate choice for this trip and not just where we happen to be. You go up for the tree and come back to a neighborhood where nothing is happening at 10pm in December.

How to get there from us

Take the E from World Trade Center to 5 Av/53 St, then walk about five minutes west and south to the plaza. Rome2rio puts that ride at roughly 19 minutes, with trains about every 10 minutes. Rockefeller Center's own directions list the B, D, F or M to 47-50 Sts Rockefeller Center, which puts you underneath the complex, and the 6 to 51 St. The M doesn't run on weekends, so on a Saturday the E is the cleaner plan from down here.

On the ceremony night itself, assume the closest stations are jammed and expect street closures around the plaza. Getting off further away and walking in is usually faster than trying to surface next to it.

When to go instead

A weekday before 9am is the best version of the tree, full stop. The second-best is late, after about 10pm, once the dinner crowds thin. Both are cold, and both are worth it. The tree is lit from early December until it comes down in January (the 2025 tree came down on January 10, for a sense of the window).

If you're making a night of it, the skating rink at the base of the tree is small and heavily booked in December, so reserve rather than turn up.

Why sleep downtown in December

Midtown in December is the most crowded part of the most crowded month. The Financial District is the opposite: it empties out after the offices close, and on weekends it's genuinely quiet. You're twenty minutes from the tree and a walk from the harbor.

Our suites are apartments, which matters more on a December trip than a July one. There's room to leave the shopping bags and wet coats somewhere, and the Executive King Suite runs 542 square feet, which is not a Midtown hotel room. Space to live in the city. The rooftop terrace is a nice spot in the evening if you can stand the cold, and there's coffee in the lounge before you head north.
