What's the Closest Subway Station to 17 John Street?
Fulton Street is the one you'll use. From 17 John Street, walk a block north to Fulton Street and you're at the Fulton Center, the glass building at Broadway and Fulton with the big oculus skylight. Eight lines connect underground there without you ever going back up to the street: the A and C, the J and Z, the 2 and 3, and the 4 and 5. There are entrances on Fulton at Broadway, Nassau and William, so whichever direction you come from, one of them is close.

What that means in practice: the 4 or 5 express gets you to Midtown in roughly 15 to 20 minutes. The A runs up the west side toward Penn Station and beyond, the 2 and 3 head to the Upper West Side, and the A and C are one stop from High Street if you want DUMBO without walking the bridge. For flights, the A to Howard Beach or the E to Jamaica both connect to the JFK AirTrain from here.
If you'd rather stay above ground, Pier 11 at Wall Street is about a five-minute walk and the NYC Ferry runs from there to Brooklyn, Queens and the East River stops. It's slower than the train and much better looking.
One small warning: Fulton Center is a maze the first time. If you come in at Broadway and want the 4 or 5, follow the signs down and east rather than guessing. After a day or two you'll know it.
